High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake, Fresno Yacht Club | July 11 - 12 |
Story |
The 2009 High Sierra Regatta hosted by Fresno YC was a blast and
absolutely worth the long trip to Huntington Lake. TISC was well represented by 4 V15's and 3 Lasers. Sarah McNaboe sailed with her mom while her little brother cleaned up in the Laser Radial Fleet. Alex and Chris sailed together as usual while Rolf, of the J-105 Donkey Jack dynasty fame, teamed up with his upstart rival off the Duck Boat, Howard Bentley. I managed to steal Amy from Adam for the weekend (Adam, I don't think I'm going to give her back!). The off the water action was centered on Howard's RV, aka "The Party Bus" at the campsite...I'll leave the details to your imagination. We couldn't have asked for better conditions on the water. Two long races were sailed Saturday and one especially long (9.3 miles) race was sailed Sunday. The Benicia V15 fleet was represented at the front by Jamie Fontanella and his wife/rockstar crew Dani. The final race developed into a full blown match race between the Naval Academy grad (Jamie, USNA Class of '88) and the Coast Guard Academy grad (Kevin, CGA '03). No history between those two programs! Despite sailing the length of the lake twice, the lead boats were never more than a few boat lengths apart. After 10 or more lead changes Amy's awesome crew work paid off and we were able get to the inside for the last leeward mark. Then it was a matter of surviving the tacking duel up to the finish. 30+ tacks in less than half a mile is a work out at 7000 feet! Alex and Chris rounded out the top three and took home what has to be one of the coolest trophies in sailing, despite departing the city before 4AM on Saturday morning and barely making it to the starting line in time for the first race. A big thank you goes out to the Fresno Yacht Club for running a great event and the Benicia V15 Fleet for the great sailors. It's time to get motivated for HSR 2010, mark your calendars for the second weekend in July. You won't regret making the trip! |
